My mom was born in Nueva Ecija, Philippines. She grew up in a
family of 6, with her being the oldest.
She is at the young age of 47 and has a sister and 2 brothers.
She also lived with a multitude of dogs and animals including a
monkey who has come and gone throughout her lifetime. She works as a manager at Burger King
and is a wonderful mother at home who loves to praise Jesus during her spare time.
She believes that you should speak the mother tongue until you get old,
doing the traditional process of putting the elderly's hand on your forehead as a sign of respect,
"opo & po" and loving your family even if you have your own.
My mom's name, Glenda, comes from the word "Glen"
which means a secluded valley/river and her parents added a "da" to make it feminine.
Writing this website now she was surprised and sad
when the internet became a thing because the kids she saw that
played outside became less frequent and eventually halted because they became
more focused on playing games. She thinks that a skill that she and her grandparents
had that none of the younger generation has today
is farming and selling vegetables and fruits. Thankfully, her favourite child is me.
And finally, the most important event that she went through (a negative major event)
was the time her father lost his job and her younger siblings couldn't get any more education.
My dad was born in Naga; Bicol, Philippines. Who grew up in a family of 5, with him
also being the oldest out of his siblings. He is at the age of 45 and has
a sister and a brother. He works at a service desk in a company called Lexel where
he fixes other people’s communication and technical problems in their computer.
He has been working in the IT department
for many years now. He is a good dad who provides and loves his family.
He believes that the younger generation should always pray and
hear Sunday mass, he believes that we should have respect for others, especially the elderly.
The thing he's suprised the most about modernity
is how fast the technology adapts and becomes even more impressive annualy.
As he works in a very technology-dependent job, he has
to keep being updated on the new technology that comes in. He said that the skill that him and
his grandparents had that none of the new generation has now is patience.
He also said that his favourite child is also me!! And that he says don't believe his mom (grandmother for me)
because her favourite child is my aunt. He said the hardest thing
about adapting to the new information age was communication since at the start, his mom had trouble adjusting
the settings to her phone which made her hard to text and call,
that was the time we had the most trouble because technology suddenly became updated and we had to adapt quick.
Finally, the last important event that happened to him
was the typhoon Ondoy or typhoon Ketsana that hit the Philippines in 2009. Not only did it destroy almost everything
of what he owned in the last years, [He thinks] he lost
my birth certificate and his television :(. He had to stay in [my mom's]cousin's house for
a long while and along the way he had to walk in the deep, dirty water.
Also [my mom] stepped on a nail and it was very gross, [I] also needed
to poop along the way so he went in a fish store and used their bathroom.
My grandmother was born in the Philippines. She grew up in a family of 9 siblings.
She is at the age of 73 and she worked as an accountant before retiring.
Her first name, Gerarda, derives from
the name of her grandmother and Lourdes was the name of her cousin,
who was the housewife of her mom when she gave birth to her.
Sadly, there isn't a precious heirloom in our family that exists, however,
she thinks that she can pass down her wisdowm and knowledge to younger generations.
She hopes that we can be successful in my studies and in all my endeavors in life.
What she was surprised the most about modernity was the invention of Facebook.
Facebook allowed her to connect with her old highschool friends.
One time, she found her friend from highschool
and they became friends again even after not seeing eachother for more than 50 years.
She says that an infamous person
in her family was her brother because she said that he
was crazy and nobody liked him because he was a bit [mentally challenged].
She believes that a skill that she and her
grandparents had that none of the younger generation has is sewing.
Like, hand sewing because she sees that a lot of
young people [including me], don't know how to sew manually and instead
rely on [sewing] machines to help you sew cloth and materials.
She says that her favourite child is everyone because
she loves them all equally (but my dad thinks it's his younger sister).
She thinks the hardest part for her and her parents to do when civilization reached the
information age was adapting to the changes as all of a suddent
here were computers everywhere and she had to quickly learn how to type for
her work as they've reached a new stage of the modern world.
She thinks that the most important (negative) event that happened to her was
the Mount Pinatubo explosion in 1991, as she still remembers the time the
ground shook and she all saw the smoke and the eruption, even from miles away.
